MOROCCO - SOCIETY - RELIGION - HERITAGE - HISTORY
Members of a Sufi brotherhood gather by the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of Morocco's former ruling Idrisid dynasty, during a spiritual event in the city of Moulay Driss Zerhoun in the country's north on July 26, 2018. Dubbed the "pilgrimage of the poor" -- each summer, tens of thousands of people flood a small northern Moroccan town to honour a Sufi saint buried there 12 centuries ago. A descendant of the Prophet Mohammed, Idriss I founded Morocco's first Islamic dynasty and in the late eighth century was buried at Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, nestled between two hills covered in olive groves.
